Check Your Qatar Visa Status with Just Your Passport Number

For workers and family members whose sponsor applied for them · Updated October 2026

Here's the situation most people are in: a company in Qatar has offered you a job, your passport copy went off to their office weeks ago, and since then — silence, broken only by "wait, it's processing." You don't have a visa number. You may not even be sure an application exists.

Good news: you don't need the visa number to check. Qatar's Ministry of Interior (MOI) lets anyone look up a visa record using the passport number — and that number has been in your pocket the whole time.

Why the passport method suits most applicants

Think of it this way: the visa number is like a roll number that's only assigned once your file is well into the system. The passport number is your name on the classroom door — it's attached to your record from the moment your sponsor submits the application. That's why this method works earlier than any other, and why agents who insist "you can't check without a visa number" are simply wrong.

It also settles the question nobody wants to ask out loud: did my sponsor actually apply? If a record appears, the application is real. If nothing appears after a reasonable wait, you have facts to ask questions with.

What to have in front of you

  • Your passport — or a clear photo of its bio page. You'll copy the number character for character.
  • Your nationality — as a country name for the dropdown list. This must be the nationality of the passport you check with.
  • A steady connection — the portal is not forgiving of flaky mobile data; it can time out mid-search.

Notice what's missing from that list: no username, no password, no payment, no app to install. The lookup is a public window into the MOI system, open to anyone holding the right two details.

The walkthrough, click by click

  1. Open the official portal. Type portal.moi.gov.qa into your browser yourself — don't follow links from random pages or messages. Typing it means you always land on the genuine government site.
  2. Find the Inquiries menu. On the portal's menu, choose Inquiries. A list of service groups appears.
  3. Go into Visa Services. From that list, select Visa Services.
  4. Open Visa Inquiry and Printing. This single page does both jobs: it finds your record, and later it produces the printable visa.
  5. Switch Search By to Passport Number. The page opens with Application Number preselected — this catches many people out. Change the dropdown to Passport Number.
  6. Enter your passport number exactly as printed. Same letters, same digits, and — important — no spaces, even if your passport prints the number in groups.
  7. Select your nationality from the dropdown. Take care here: similar-sounding country names sit near each other in the list.
  8. Complete the CAPTCHA and press Search. Copy the characters exactly as shown (it's case-sensitive). Your result loads on the same page.

Do it on the real portal

Everything above happens at portal.moi.gov.qa — the one and only place this check should be done. This guide explains the steps; it never asks for your number.

Reading the result screen

A successful search shows a compact summary of your record. Before anything else, read your own name. It should match your passport spelling exactly — airlines and border officers compare the two, and even one wrong letter is worth getting fixed through your sponsor.

The screen also shows your visa type (work, family visit, tourist, and so on), the validity dates, and the all-important status. That single word or phrase — Under Process, Ready to Print, Valid to Use — tells you where your file sits and whether anything is expected from you. Our status meanings guide translates each one into plain language, including Under Outside Process, the message that confuses people most.

When the screen shows nothing

A blank result feels like bad news, but in practice it's usually one of three boring explanations: a typo or stray space in the number, the wrong nationality selected, or an application that genuinely hasn't reached the system yet — sponsors sometimes sit on paperwork for days before submitting. Run through the checks in our "not found" troubleshooting guide before you worry, and give a fresh application a few working days before concluding anything.

A note for Pakistani travellers

Through 2026, Pakistani passport holders have been advised by their embassy in Doha that Qatar's visa-on-arrival facility was suspended, with no restart date announced. If you're travelling from Pakistan, plan on having your visa fully arranged — and shown as valid — before you book a flight, and confirm the current position on official channels such as hayya.qa before you travel.

Where to go next

Already holding a 15-digit visa number? The visa number method gives you the same record through a different door. Status says you're approved? Jump to printing your visa. And if your sponsor keeps saying "tomorrow" while the portal says nothing at all, our troubleshooting guide will help you work out which one to believe.
